Friday Linkups - Scandal in Skibbereen
It's Friday linkup time! I'm linking up with the Book Blogger Hop hosted by Coffee Addicted Writer, Book Beginnings of Fridays hosted by Rose City Reader, and the Friday 56 hosted by Freda's Voice
This Week's Book Blogger Hop Question:
How do you handle negative comments left on your blog?
My Answer:
I've been lucky and never had a really negative comment. There were 2 that came off as super critical. One was on a post that was at least 6 months old when the person commented very harshly disagreeing with me about my thoughts on who the audience for the book was and I was able to pretty easily ignore that. The other was an author who had an objection to something I didn't like about their book. I didn't understand it really because while there had been a point that had annoyed me the review itself was very positive. I made a non-committal answer to their comment and then have just avoided reviewing their books on the blog ever since. I don't mind people disagreeing with me - a book worked for me that didn't work for them or vice versa - there are ways to discuss it nicely and that's what almost everyone does.
Sheila Connolly has been one of my favorite cozy mystery authors since I started ready cozy mysteries! Her Apple Orchard series is fantastic and I was really excited when I discovered that she was starting a series set in Ireland. I read the first book shortly after it came out and really enjoyed it but the 2nd book just never made it to the top of the pile until now. I'm super excited to be starting Scandal in Skibbereen and reading about recently relocated Maura's 2nd adventure in Ireland.
The Beginning:
Now that high season had arrived, Sullivan's Pub was busier than Maura Donovan had ever seen it.
My Thoughts:
I can just see the pub crowded with people laughing and talking. I'm not sure what weather high season actually is in but in my head it's cold and there's a fire roaring!
The 56:
Mick noticed. "No, but it falls to you to keep him in line. You're the owner here now."
"I've never managed anyone in my life. You think he'd be better off somewhere else?"
My Thoughts:
I feel for Maura here (she's the 2nd speaker). Having to manage someone who really doesn't want to be managed is definitely a challenge - especially when you have no desire to do any managing!
So what do you think? Keep reading?
Oh I love an Ireland setting!! Hope you enjoy this one!!
ReplyDeleteI loved this one, and the previous book, too. I've been meaning to read more of this series, since I love the character of Maura...and also the setting of Ireland.
ReplyDeleteNegative comments haven't happened to me more than once or twice, and they were on Amazon reviews. Sometimes it is good to ignore those people, especially if their comments feel like an attack. How can one defend against those?
I just recalled that an author who had been sending me all of her books was upset with me over a comment I made in a review...and again, I had given her a great review overall. I just had one issue. Now she doesn't send me her books...but that's okay, too.
I try to remember that authors can be very sensitive about their work...LOL.
Here's my Friday Feature: “PERSONS UNKNOWN”
I've been lucky with not having negative comments as well...maybe I should try harder ;-)
ReplyDeleteI think I've heard of the Apple Orchard series before, but haven't read any of the books. This one seems interesting, thanks for mentioning it.
ReplyDeleteI will have to check this one out. I'm intrigued by the premise.
ReplyDeleteI've never had negative comments on my book blogs, but I had a bit of a problem with a rather unpleasant "troll" on one of my other blogs. Not pleasant.
This sounds like a delightful cozy series. I love the setting. Thanks for introducing me to this author.
ReplyDeleteMy Friday post features The Pecan Man.
Gr...r...what a &4#2@ blog. Now you've got a negative comment. How will you handle it? Just teasing. I have had a few negative comments about content, not me, so I am not too worried about it. One time I addressed the "Anonymous" commenter with pretty pointed comments myself. Not sure it reached the person, but just in case, I wanted them to know my side. Once or twice I deleted comments which were mostly SPAM, I suppose, but I didn't want my blog infecting anyone else;s blog. My Friday Quotes
ReplyDeleteI've not had many negative comments either, if any. A few ambiguous ones maybe , where you're not quite sure what someone meant, but I just err on the side of caution when replying and assume they meant something nice. :)
ReplyDeleteA cozy in Ireland? Yes please! I need to spend some time at Sullivan's Pub lol.
I can't think of any negative comments that I have had to deal with. I don't really get upset easily so there is that. There have been a few comments that could be taken more than one way so I just assume they were joking and being positive. The book you are reading sounds great!
ReplyDeleteThat cover and title are so fun. I'm always up for another cozy series too:)
ReplyDeleteMy Friday 56 from Beautiful Broken Girls
I need to try one of her other series, I have only listened to her Relatively Dead series which is really a unusual cozy type series as there is really no murders involved but ancestral ghost.
ReplyDeleteI don't read a lot of cozies, but this one does sound good. :)
ReplyDeleteLauren @ Always Me
Oh yes...always polite ways to handle a disagreement, but I would choose to just ignore. :)
ReplyDeleteHope you are having a good weekend.
Happy Hopping!!

I hate it when people criticize your reviews in a rude manner. It's like you can't even give out your personal thoughts on a book without being attacked for it.
ReplyDeleteHere’s my Book Blogger Hop!

That happened to me once too, when an author wasn't happy with something in my review of her book even though it was an overall positive review.
ReplyDeleteSheila Connolly's book sounds good. I may have to look for that one!
I need more but hope you love it! Happy weekend!
ReplyDeleteI think the fact that people are welcome to disagree with you is a good point to make. With my 8th graders, they often think that disagreement=meanness, but there are ways to go about disagreeing that encourage dialogue. I wish for you more dialogue. Happy reading!

My Blog Hop Answer
It looks like most of us book bloggers have been very lucky, for the most part, regarding negative comments. As you stated in your comment on my blog, the book community is indeed very gracious!
ReplyDeleteThose two people made uncalled-for comments, and they definitely weren't nice. If I had received such comments, I would have promptly deleted them, and not bothered to explain anything. Both of these people could have emailed you, instead of leaving such rude comments on your blog! But, of course, their intent was to hurt you. If this ever happens again, my advice is to delete, and never look back! Lol.
You're a nice, decent person, and certainly don't deserve to be treated the way you were! :) :) :)
As for your book selection, well, I REALLY have to get a cozy under my belt sometime, right? Lol. And this one takes place in Ireland, no less! Gotta add it to my TBR!!
Thanks for sharing! Thanks as well for commenting on my BBH post!! <3 <3 :) :)
I agree almost word for word with Maria!
ReplyDeleteWhat's nicest about going around memes you haven't done for a while is meeting new people - and finding new books! I loved my holiday near Skibbereen, so I must look out this book!
I have never had an author say anything negative on a blog review, but I have on Goodreads and they have all been Children's picture book authors. Ha! I haven't gotten any outright negative comments on the blog, but passive aggressive ones here and there seem to be popular. I love to answer them with just, "Really?" XD
ReplyDeleteAhh now I understand and I totally agree with you on your blog hop answer but if I ever have a critical comments. I will just delete it and move on because if I don't I will just keep on thinking about it and it will just upset me even more. That's why I rather delete it, address it and than move on about it. Thank you so much for stopping by my blog hop.
