It's Sunday Post time! This is hosted by the awesome Caffeinated Book Reviewer and gives us all a chance to recap our week. I'm also linking up with What Are You Reading hosted by Kathryn over at Book Date
What I Got:
Fatality by Firelight by Lynn Cahoon - This is the 2nd book in the Cahoon's Bed and Breakfast/Writer's Retreat series and I'm really looking forward to it. I love Cahoon's Tourist Trap series and am excited to see how this one is as I enjoyed the first in the series (Blog Tour)
One Wild Night by Melissa Cutler - This is a cowboy type romance with Dirty Dancing references! How can I resist a romance with Dirty Dancing references? (Publisher)
Blood Red by Wendy Corsi Staub - I heard an interview from the author and was instantly intrigued. I also read the first in her Lily Dale series and really liked it so I'm curious to see what she does in a more thriller type format. (Paperbackswap)

Currently:
Reading: Sad Cypress by Agatha Christie (though I may have to put this on hold to start The Wicked City by Beatriz Williams for a blog tour) and Pretty Little World by Elizabeth LaBan and Melissa DePino
Listening: I finished Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Flies Again by Frank Cottrell-Boyce and am about to listen to the original Chitty Chitty Bang Bang by Ian Fleming for comparison (and possibly to listen to David Tennant some more)
Watching: J and I are finishing up Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency which we're enjoying even though it's only loosely based on the book because it feels like how Douglas Adams would have gone if he'd turned it into a TV show. I also watched The Royal Wedding with Fred Astaire, Jane Powell and a whole host of other big names. It has the scene where Astaire dances on the ceiling which I've always liked but never seen it in context.
Off the Blog:
I had a lovely visit with my grandparents last weekend and I was really pleased to be there for his 93rd birthday. He's doing much better. He's out of the neck brace and recovering from pneumonia. He's still pretty week and isn't as mobile as he wants to be but he's got physical therapy a few times a week and hopefully that'll help. His biggest problem right now is just boredom. He's always been incredibly active and now not being able to do anything is frustrating plus most of the things he enjoys - woodworking, taking care of the house and grounds, and traveling - aren't things he can do right now so he's a bit at a loss. He's been listening to audio books (just finished Boys on the Boat which he really liked) and watching football but that can only go so far.
I've booked the Tornado's birthday party at one of those inflatable places here. I like this one because it's reserved only for party guests so you don't have to fight off other kids. His birthday is at the end of December but by that point I'm so worn out that there's no way I could handle a party and I imagine everyone else is exhausted as well. We've not done one yet (other than the family party on his birthday) so I'm pretty nervous about it. I'm always worried that no one will come and that he'll be disappointed.

I love that cover of fatality by Firelight! Looks so cozy... well minus the body and the spilled wine lol! I haven't tried any of Cahoon's cozies yet but one of these days... glad t hear your grandfather is doing well. sometimes forced inactivity is the worst when you;'re used to being busy. Good luck going forward w/ his recovery.
ReplyDeleteDirk Gently- I think that's on Netflix? I may have to check...
Ooo I need to listen to the Chitty, Chitty, Bang, Bang narrated by David :) He can read me anything really..love his voice :) Sounds like the Tornado's party will be a blast. It is so nice you got to spend time with your grandparents. I miss mine, as all have passed. Have a wonderful week!
ReplyDeleteI would use any excuse to listen to David Tennant. Our daughter's birthday falls in school holidays so I had the same fear. Then I did one - finally - two years ago and more people than RSVP'd turned up and it was chaos - fun chaos but chaos non the less.
ReplyDeleteGlad you had fun with your grandparents and that your grandpa is doing better :-) And ooh, a party at an inflatable place?! I never went to any inflatable place as a kid, only the occasional bounce house, haha. I'm sure it'll be fun!
ReplyDeleteSo happy you had a good visit with your grandparents. It's wonderful that you still have them in your life. Birthday parties - remember those! Don't worry - parties at other venues (not your house) are easier in some respects. At least someone else gets to clean up. Ha! I suspect that many will come - probably more than RSVP (do people even know what that is any more?). Have a good reading week!
ReplyDeleteYou've had a good week of reading, I like the list of books. Very happy to hear about your grandfather. He must be made of sturdy stuff recovering from all that! Does he play chess? They make a chess challenger inch is an electronic game board. You can pit yourself against the board and it tells you where to move the piece hen it's the board's turn.
ReplyDeleteAlso, how did u fare with the storms yesterday. And today? It's a mess over here and we had a horrific drive back to Havana from Crestview FL yesterday. We are under tornado watch. How are you?
Glad you had a visit with your grandparents. Hope your grandfather is better soon!
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to get my hands on the new Lynn Cahoon book, I have reviewed all of hers on audio so I am patiently waiting for my audio version to get here when it's released. I enjoyed the first one as well though her Tourist Trap series will probably always be my favorite.
ReplyDeleteI am curious about Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency, I heard about it from Debbish's blog I believe. I just haven't looked it up yet. I am curious about the book though. :) I love Fred Astaire movies!! (though Gene Kelly is my fav. dancer) :)
Glad your Grandfather is doing better, and I am sure as active as it sounds he was he is so bored. Poor guy. I think your B-day party will go over well as it's at an inflatable place that alone should get kids to want to come...lol. :) Good Luck!
Enjoy those books!

Week in Review
I think I have a book or two by Lynn Cahoon, but I haven't read them yet. I'll have to try to do that! I like the cover of Fatality by Firelight and hope you enjoy it, Katherine.
ReplyDeleteI hope the party goes well. I remember all the birthday parties as our kids were growing--both the ones we put on and the friends' parties. So much fun for the kids. I bet the Tornado will have a wonderful time and so will his friends.
It's great you were able to visit your grandparents and be there for his 93rd birthday. I hope his recovery continues going well. And that he can get back to doing the things he really enjoys.
Have a great week, Katherine!
Glad you have a nice visit with your grandparents. Happy Birthday to him! 93 is a great age and to still be able to do all he does is amazing! Your grandfather sounds like my Uncle, he broke his hip and is clawing at the walls in the rehab center. He is usually an out and about person and now he is stuck, he has been there since the beginning of November. I think he finally gets out this week.
ReplyDeleteI always worry no one will show up at my kids parties too. Lately we have been keeping it very small. So I know at least a few kids will come.
I hope you have a fantastic week, Katherine! Happy Reading! ox
Glad you had a good visit with your Grandparents. Oh kids love those inflatable places. We had our daughter's at one last year. Good luck! Can't wait to see your thoughts Pretty Little World. Have a great week!
ReplyDeleteThe inflatable places are pretty popular birthday parties here. They are easy for people to attend, too. I think that's a great choice! Even if the attendance is low, he still gets to bounce and do all the things.
ReplyDeleteSounds like a good week and I'm glad you had a nice visit with your grandparents. Love that your grandfather is listening to audiobooks... does he have you to thank for that?
ReplyDeleteGlad you had a wonderful visit!
ReplyDeletePretty Little World is a book I've been eyeing lately....I have a feeling it will "fall" onto my stacks any day now.
I enjoyed Blood Red...in fact, Wendy Corsi Staub always piques my interest.
Hope the Tornado has a fabulous birthday party...I do enjoy those events, and it's been ages since any of my kids (or even the grandkids) were that age.
Thanks for sharing...and here are MY WEEKLY UPDATES
It sounds like you've had a good week all in all, especially with the visit from your grandparents. I hope the birthday party goes well! Harry reading, and have a great week!
ReplyDeleteGood to hear your grandfather is doing better! I know it must be hard for him, but hopefully he'll get back to things he loves as his physical therapy continues. And I'm sure Tornado will have a great birthday party :) Have a great week!
ReplyDeleteI was tempted to request Fatality by Firelight on Netflix but I have to read the first book. I'm hooked on cozy mysteries now so I'm always looking for new series. It is good to hear your grandfather is feeling better and I can imagine him feeling stir crazy. My Mom has had health issues so can't do the gardening like she used to. I hope he continues to get stronger so he can't go back to his favorite hobbies. Good luck with the party! I feel the same way and always got worried that no one would come. I hope it is a success and he has a great time. I hope you have a great week!
ReplyDeleteGlad that your grandfather is doing much better! Happy birthday to him!
ReplyDeleteHere’s my Sunday Post!
Ronyell @ Rabbit Ears Book Blog and join in this week’s Book Photo Sundays!
I'm sure ppl will come to Tornado's partay! The place sounds fun and keeps it simple and easy for you and your husband. Glad to read your grandpa is doing well at his age.
ReplyDeleteGood to hear your grandad is improving but I can see how it would be frustrating for him waiting to get back to being a little more active. I have just started B William's A Wicked City.
ReplyDeleteSo good to hear your grandfather is improved. Boredom can be frustrating. Netlfix, puzzle books, reading. All good things to keep busy. You are Johnny on the spot with booking Tornado's bounce house for his party. Don't worry - people will come!
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad to hear your grandfather's health is improving. Good luck with the party. I hope it's a success :)
ReplyDeleteGlad you had such a nice visit with your grandparents and that your grandfather is doing well.
ReplyDeleteI love Wendy Corsi Staub's books. I'm really behind on them though. I'm also behind on Lynn Cahoon's new series too.
Have a great week!
Great thinking ahead re the Tornado's birthday party - I'm sure you'll be relieved when the time comes.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad your grandfather is doing better and that the catch up with them went well!
I am so glad that your grandfather is doing better. It has to be really hard to be so limited. Hopefully, he can get back to his favorite activities soon.
ReplyDeleteI was tempted by the Melissa Cutler book because I love Dirty Dancing but have resisted so far. I am pretty sure that I have a copy of Blood Red to read. I hope to get to that soon. Have a great week!
Looks like a pretty good week. That's great about your grandpa, happy belated birthday to him! I'm sure Tornado's birthday will be a blast with plenty of people showing up. ;)
ReplyDeleteYay for finding a birthday party venue where you don't have to navigate a bunch of random children. I always thought it was tough to keep track of the kids that I was responsible for in places that are overrun with children. I hope he has a great time. I know that it's nerve racking to plan a party and hope that our child is not disappointed in any way. Usually if some of their favorite buddies show all will be right.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad your grandfathers birthday was enjoyable and he's doing well.
Love that you got a chance to visit your grandfather. How cool that he's listening to audios. Hope your party goes well.
ReplyDeleteSo happy you were able to see your grandfather. When they reach that age and still want to be active it can be hard to slow down. Hopefully the football this weekend kept him busy, sadly my team lost miserably.
ReplyDeleteNice books and nice week for you.
ReplyDeleteSo glad about your visit with your grandfather.
ENJOY this week.

My It's Monday, What Are You Reading
Glad to hear your grandpa's doing well, if bored. How blessed you are to have him still at 93 years old! And so wonderful that the kids have gotten a lot of years with him.
