This Week in Reading - August 30

It's Sunday Post time!  This is hosted by the awesome Caffeinated Book Reviewer and gives us all a chance to recap our week.

What I Got:

This week I didn't get any review books! However, I've been craving a trip to the used bookstore and I gave in a few days ago.  I managed to get out with only 11 but that was because I made myself stop.  I could've easily left with 3 times as many!
For this trip I got:
Echo Lake by Carla Neggers
The Betrayed by Heather Graham - These two I actually have for review in ebook form but I think I can get to print faster.
Stitch Me Deadly by Amanda Lee
Ghost Moon
Ghost Shadow
Ghost Night - a trilogy by Heather Graham that I've been wanting to read
Waking the Dead by Heather Graham
Trust Your Eyes by Linwood Barclay
The Hen of the Baskervilles by Donna Andrews
A Ghostly Undertaking by Tonya Kappes
Requeim for a Dealer by Jo Bannister

This trip ended up heavy on Heavy Graham but otherwise is a mix of a few new authors and others that I've enjoyed but have been wanting to read more of.  Now to figure out where to put them!

Currently:

Reading:  A is for Arsenic: The Poisons of Agatha Christie by Kathryn Harkup by and Harbor Island by Carla Neggers

Listening: The Penderwicks: A Summer Tale of Four Sisters, Two Rabbits, and a Very Interesting Boy by Jeanne Birdsall.  I'm enjoying this but not in love with it.  I'm hoping I get more pulled in soon.  I finished listening to a creepy children's mystery called Christina's Ghost by Betty Ren Wright which was really fun.

Watching: Not a whole lot.  I'm definitely feeling the between seasons slump.  I'm still enjoying NCIS on Netflix and will probably be going back to Murder She Wrote soon.

Off the Blog:

This week is J's birthday we'll be going out to dinner and the regular stuff.  We're going to try to watch Gone Girl tonight as well.  He's been wanting to see it and I do want to see it but have been dragging my feet about it.  I really liked the casting they did and I've heard pretty consistently good things about the movie but I'm a little hesitant to get sucked into that world of craziness again!

In general we're trying to get away from collapsing in front of the TV most nights once the Tornado goes to bed and have been having pretty good luck.  It's not that we're anti-TV but it was getting to be where that's all we do in the evening and there's only so many shows we watch together so it frequently ends up with us just flipping and finding nothing.  The one bad thing about watching less TV at night is that that was the time I used to reply to comments so now I'm incredibly behind.  I read all the comments I get and really appreciate them!  I just need to work out a new reply system.

On the Blog:

  1. I love trips to the used bookstore! Looks like you left with some great finds. I'm really intrigued by your classic mysteries list on Tuesday- off to check it out!

  2. I love a stack of well used books. and with the price of a new book nowadays, you can make out like a bandit in the used places. Plus they're fun. :) Great stack!

It's amazing how the more channels the less there is to waych, seems like. I find myself on netflix more, if it wasn't for that I don't know what I'd watch! :)

  3. Mmmm love used bookstores, although don't frequent them as much as I used to. I usually get a big stack of used books at our fundraising Book Fair once a year, still have a big stack from last year! Hope you enjoy all your Heather Grahams.

  4. I'm dragging my feet about watching Gone Girl as well. My fav part of the book was the clever writing and I don't think that will translate well on screen. I'll get to it someday though, hope you enjoy it, craziness and all!
I love visiting second hand book stores, you just never know what you'll find. Happy reading :)

  5. I wish I had a great used book store nearby, but it would probably not be a good thing for my wallet!

Good for you on trying to watch less TV - it's so easy sometimes to just put that box on and not do anything at all...

Have a fantastic week ahead and happy reading.

  6. Used bookstores are so much fun. I don't go often, because I'm trying to limit the number of books I have. It helps we don't have a used bookstore very close to us!

A is for Arsenic sounds interesting. She often used poison in her books so it would be fun to read more about the ones she chose. I'll look forward to your review, Katherine. I've been watching NCIS on TV and enjoying it I should go to Netflix and watch in order.

And good for you not watching as much TV. My husband and I have a number of programs we don't watch together so we end up watching some questionable shows sometimes. And that's the time I work on comments and other blog stuff, too. But sometimes I just can't take it anymore and go read for awhile...lol! I'm trying to get my husband to turn off the TV more. We'll see how much luck I have!

  7. Wow, 11 books! Very impressive! That'll keep you busy for a while.

And you've reminded me how much I used to love Murder She Wrote. I recorded repeats a few years ago (for about a year) until I started seeing double-ups. I loved that show (then and well... recently!).

  8. I watch very little tv - just the news for the weather. There's not even much news in the TV News. We watch one or two shows a week and sometimes a movie.

  9. You had a great haul, and I must read some of those authors!

I have seen Gone Girl several times...once in the theater, and then On Demand a few times. I had to watch it again with my son and DIL when they were here, as they hadn't seen it. They loved it...my son is kind of a movie buff, so I knew he would appreciate the twists and turns. Hope you like it.

Thanks for sharing...and here are MY WEEKLY UPDATES

  10. I haven't been to a used bookstore in quite some time. Having no money to spend is a big deterrent in that area. lol Hubby and I have tons of shows we can watch together and that's not always a good thing. We should really get outside and do some projects, but again, no money means no supplies, so we're back in front of the tv. I look at it this way...we've busted our asses for nearly 20 years and once our big loan is paid off (and the boys braces) in 2 years we'll be able to start back up on projects, so we should just enjoy this downtime while we have it. Am I right? :D I hope you have a fantastic week!

  11. I used to love visiting used bookstores...well, actually I used to love visiting all bookstores - new or used. I haven't since i got my Kindle, but everyday I'm browsing ebook stores. LOL

Hope you have a great week and enjoy your books!

  13. I watched all the Murder She Wrote episodes with my grandparents when they were living. We always loved solving the cases. I love a good used book store...sounds like you hit the jackpot.

  15. Used Bookstores are so dangerous! But when you see how many books you get for the cheap price, it's hard to pass it up. :-) I'm so trying to catch up on all the tv I have on my DVR, I've got to get through it. :-) Have a great week, and thanks for stopping by my Sunday post earlier!

  16. Awesome haul from the used bookstore! I may drive down and borrow them.:D

I have a tendency to collapse on the couch in the evenings too and go online while I watch a show. It's a hard habit to break. Good luck!

  17. I love trips to the used bookstore ... only 11 books, congrats on your restraint Katherine lol. I loved the movie Gone Girl, she's one twisted character, hope you enjoy it too. While I'm waiting for Scandal and Vikings and a few others to return, I might start watching Homeland. I try and use that time to comment too. If you work out a really good new system, let me know lol. Have a great week and happy reading :)

  18. I have seen some good things about The Peach Keeper. I have been meaning to get back here to your Good Mourning review because I did get it from Netgalley after seeing it listed in your haul a while back. I thought I would like it because I loved Six Feet Under, and I used to watch Family Plots the reality show about a family run funeral home. I didn't know what this week's TTT prompt was until I saw it here. It definitely looks fun. Have a wonderful week. :)

  19. I am itchin' to visit a used bookstore to find more of Julia Quinn's books. Our library is limited in her works in eBooks and in paperbacks.

  20. Robin read The Penderwicks to me, and I loved it - maybe in part because it was the first book she ever read to me, as opposed to me reading to her. She had listened to it, so she did the voices very much like they are on the recording. It did get better as it went on, and I loved the next two, as well. They reminded me a little of the Melendy quartet by Elizabeth Enright - not in the plot or characters, but in the overall feeling.

I want to read your Threads of Evidence review but I'm holding off until I get mine written. I read it (and really liked it) but haven't had time to write the review yet. Maybe tonight or tomorrow!

  21. Looks like you had a good week! I need to organize my comment/blogging time better too. It's hard to find the right time to do it without eating into my reading time.
