Friday Linkups: Alice in Wonderland
It's Friday linkup time! I'm linking up with the Book Blogger Hop hosted by Coffee Addicted Writer, Book Beginnings of Fridays hosted by Rose City Reader, and the Friday 56 hosted by Freda's Voice.
This Week's Blogger Hop Question:
Books, books, and more books. What other things do you love besides reading? Now I know that is a difficult question, but we can't read 24/7, right?
My Answer:
I don't suffer from a lack of things to do! Besides reading I have tons of TV shows I love - most of which fall into either crime or food categories. I also love to garden and am excited every year when it's time to get my veggies in the ground. I've recently become obsessed with hiking and finding good trails to hike with the Tornado. I also love to cook and bake and enjoy hunting up and trying new recipes.
This week's book is Alice in Wonderland which I'm embarrassed to say I've never read despite the fact that this is my grandmother's favorite book. My grandmother is my original reading buddy and is responsible for introducing me to a number of my favorites - Agatha Christie, Patricia Wentworth, Rosamunde Pilcher, Bill Bryson, and pretty much cozy mysteries in general. When I was making up my Classics Club list and then my list for The Reading Assignment Challenge I just knew this was one of the books I absolutely had to get to!
The Beginning:
Alice was beginning to get very tired of sitting by her sister on the bank and of having nothing to do: once or twice she had peeped into the book her sister was reading, but it had no pictures or conversations in it, "and what is the use of a book," thought Alice, 'without pictures or conversations?"
My Thoughts:
I can just picture a little girl squirming around trying to entertain herself and being completely bored. I like his writing style already. It's so descriptive without being overly wordy.
The 56:
It sounded an excellent plan, no doubt, and very neatly and simply arranged; the only difficulty was, that she had not the smallest idea how to set about it; and while she was peering about anxiously among the trees, a sharp bark just over her head made her look up in a great hurry.
My Thoughts:
Even though I'm not here yet I can guess what's going on since I'm familiar with the story. I'm still in love with the writing style as it does provide a really whimsical feel to the reading of the story.
So what do you think? Keep reading? Have you read this one and if so what did you think?
You can never go wrong with Alice!

Cooking, hiking, and gardening... yes, yes, and yes! Have a great weekend :)
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty much a reading girl in the pursuits department, although I do watch a number of crime shows. I need to be a walking, sweating girl. My summer project. Anyway, that sounds like a good plan with your little one. And I've never read Alice either. Of course, I watched the Disney version umpteen times - one of my girl's favorites. Enjoy and have a good weekend!
ReplyDeleteI read this so long ago and then when my eldest daughter was young. Now her daughter enjoyed it and the Disney movie, but also the newer version by Tim Burton, lol. Glad you are getting a chance to reconnect with the classics. I like to walk also and to watch crime/mystery shows on tv when I can. Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteGood choice. And I must say that Rosamunde Pilcher is also one of my favorite authors.

I loved rereading this one a few years ago, after I had started blogging and noticed an "Alice in Wonderland Challenge." It was great to reread it...although I really loved the illustrations in my childhood book. Thanks for sharing...and here's mine: “IN THE UNLIKELY EVENT”
ReplyDeleteI have NEVER liked Alice in Wonderland. Has always creeped me out. As for the question, I do have several shows I like to watch as well. I'd love for you to check out mine ... http://lisaksbookthoughts.blogspot.com/2015/06/its-cozy-food-friday-that-means-its.html
ReplyDeleteHiking sounds fun. You do sound quite busy.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing.
Have a wonderful weekend.
Happy Hopping!!

My Blog Hop Answer
It's been so long since I read Alice that I don't remember most of it. Perhaps I should read it again. I watch all of the remake movies but that's not the same thing.

Such a beautifully-written opening! She asks a great question that says a lot about her.
ReplyDeleteDo you know, I'm not sure I've actually read this. I've seen the Disney movie but I don't recall reading the book. I like the writing style in the snippets so I may need to get and read this.
ReplyDeleteI don't know if I ever actually read Alice in Wonderland all the way through. It was never one of my favorite stories, but I've so much enjoyed the new retellings of it. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteCheck out my Friday 56
I hate to say it but I am not a huge fan of Alice and her Wonderland..lol. :( Hope you are enjoying it!

I love Alice in Wonderland!! Great choice!
ReplyDeleteHappy weekend!
I think you should definitely pick up Alice. I love the movies, but there's nothing like experiencing the unique weirdness that is the book.
ReplyDeleteHappy reading!

Can I just express how much I love this post Katherine!? First, your hobbies. I love going on hikes with my littles, they make the hiking trip all the more adventurous and daring, as oppose to a task ha ha! Secondly, you are featuring Alice's Adventures in Wonderland! I'm quite obsessed with this narrative right now, and all the retellings presently out there ha ha!
ReplyDeleteWishing you a fabulous weekend :)
I haven't read Alice in Wonderland so you have me beat. I do want to read that one day. I love the excerpts you shared. :-)
ReplyDeleteI'm partial to crime shows too. And we love to go for walks--not so much hiking as there aren't many opportunities for that these days--but it's always fun to go with my daughter and see her take on things.
