It's Top Ten Tuesday time! This is hosted by the fantastic ladies over at The Broke and the Bookish. This week's topic is Top Ten Books I'll Probably Never Read. While in theory this is a pretty easy topic. I can give you 10 books I'll probably never read off the top of my head - the usual classics which I probably should read but don't see myself racing to the library to pick up anytime soon. My next thought was my To-Read Shelf on Goodreads but after flipping through the 800+ books I didn't find any that I don't legitimately want to read. None jumped out and said "Admit it. You're not going to read me." So I turned to the place I always turn if I need an idea - Amazon. And as usual they saved their day with their Best Books of 2014 list and a little help from the Bestsellers list. So here's my top ten books I'll probably never read that lots of other people have read and have gotten lots of critical acclaim and all that. I'm in no way saying that these are bad books they're just books that for one reason or other (okay, mostly because they sound unhappy) I probably won't be picking up.

3. We Are Not Ourselves by Matthew Thomas
4. Prince Lestat by Anne Rice
5. The Remedy for Love by Bill Roorbach
6. The Martian by Andy Weir
8. The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd
9. Wild by Cheryl Strayed
10. Natchez Burning by Greg Iles
So normally I like to put reasons on these lists but the predominant reason here is because I don't want to. Are there any books that's gotten lots of raves -even by people you know and trust - but just don't motivate you to pick them up?
I read The Martian and loved it. I am looking forward to the movie. I have Wild on my library list but....we'll see.

ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea for coming up with this list, Katherine! There are a few on your list I probably will not read either. All The Light We Cannot See and Wild come to mind instantly. Two others are definitely ones I do want to read: Station Eleven and The Invention of Wings.

ReplyDeleteGood list, and I love how you came up with the titles! I do want to read The Martian, and I'm not ruling out All The Light We Cannot See because our book group might read it, but other than that, I'm not likely to pick up any of these, either. And definitely not the Anne Rice book.
ReplyDeleteOh yeah, I don't want to read ANY of these books. It's fun, when you just know there are books you are never going to read. But I also think that is good, because there are so many books out there, and it's good to know your tastes. As long as we venture outside our comfort zones every once in awhile. :)
ReplyDeleteHalf of these are on my "want to read soon" list. Had to chuckle at your "unhappy" comment because that's likely why they're on my list. I'm a sucker for unhappy books. Have no idea why.
ReplyDeleteThough if you enjoy audio, The Martian is a fun one. Not worth ALLLLLLLL the hype, but still a great listen. And definitely not unhappy.
I agree, Katherine. I just don't want to read unhappy books either. And the way you found the books was a great idea! I found some lists on Goodreads for the books high school kids should read for some of the books I listed! I did buy The Martian while ago when it was on sale, but haven't read it yet...lol.

ReplyDeleteI love your method of getting your list. So smart and honestly, there are several here that I won't ever read. Some of them, I've thought about. And I have read Natchez Burning and loved it. And want to try The Fever. But, I'm unsure about several - even though more than one of them sits on my Kindle right this minute. Impulse buying. A bad thing for me. LOL

I don't like books that sound unhappy either. I have to second Trish's comment about The Martian. I listened to it in audio and it was actually my favourite read last year - definitely not an unhappy book! It's not actually the kind of book I'd normally pick up (I'm not a big fan of man vs. nature stories) but the execution of the story was good. It also made me laugh out loud several times :)
ReplyDeleteThe only one I have 'read' on this list is The Martian which I loved when I listened to it. I will go and see the movie too. And I am not a science fiction fan. I felt like I should read All the Light We Cannot See, but like you I am passing it by!

ReplyDeleteIf I can change your mind on any of these, it has to be The Martian. OMG! Perfection! :D Maybe you might think about getting it on audio at some point? Plus the movie has a freakin' fantastic cast. I cannot wait for that and to re-read it!

I'm on the fence for Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel. I might it someday but I have picked it up and put it back down loads of time in the book shop already.
