Friday Linkups: Even in Death
It's Friday so it's time for The Book Blogger Hop hosted by Coffee Addicted Writer, Book Beginnings on Fridays hosted by Rosce City Reader and, The Friday 56 hosted by Freda's Voice.
Book Blogger Hop Question:
You can go trick or treating with any fictional character (book or film). Who would you go with?
My Answer:
I'm going to say Lily Ivory from the book I just read - A Haunting is Brewing. Not only is she a born witch so she could cast spells to get us the best candy but she owns a vintage clothing store that sounds amazing so my costume would be fantastic!
In real life however I will be trick or treating with a 4 year old Jango Fet. We're all Star Wars all the time around here.
Today's book is a short story collection called Even in Death from Kristy Feltenberger Gillespie. The author contacted me several weeks ago about this collection and another full length book. I've only read the first story but no far I'm really enjoying it.
Book Beginning:
From the story "A Fine Winter Day"
"My twin sister Corinne enters our bedroom clutching five gift boxes overflowing with khaki pants and bulky sweaters."
Page 56:
From the story "The Collector"
"That evening, Mom returns this trash to the bookcase in my new room. And I realize as I look around the room, we've been organizing useless junk this entire time. Susie was right, Mom doesn't own collectibles, she owns a landfill."
Happy Halloween!
I wonder why her twin sister needs all those khaki pants and bulky sweaters! Page 56 made me laugh because I can so relate when having to clean out family member's room in the past! Hope you have a great Friday! :)

Cleaning out stuff is always awful when it's gotten out of control like that!
DeleteThat's a lot of stuff. I'm bad about collecting and sometimes go crazy when I clean it out.
ReplyDeleteI would go treating with Dracula. He could take us all over the world to get goodies!
Happy Halloween!
here's my 56 - http://fuonlyknew.com/2014/10/31/the-friday-56-43-paradise-rot/
Dracula would definitely be a fun choice! I'm bad at throwing stuff away as well but luckily my husband isn't so he balances me out!
DeleteGreat way to describe clutter!
ReplyDeleteMy Friday post: http://www.bookclublibrarian.com/2014/10/friday-focus-friday-56-book-beginnings_31.html
Definitely poetic!
DeleteThe realization in the second excerpt is startling....and intriguing. Thanks for sharing...and for visiting my blog.
ReplyDeleteIt definitely is especially since the narrator is a child!
DeleteGreat teasers and I love your choice for a trick or treat partner :)
ReplyDeleteThanks! I think she'd be a fun choice!
DeleteLove the idea of a vintage Halloween costume...as long as it doesn't involve khakis.
ReplyDeleteEmma
Definitely! Love vintage but not sold on khaki.
DeleteHa ha ha! Your 56 made me remember my grandmother and how she herself owns a landfill of "collectibles." My house has a landfill of books! I wonder what my girls will say as they get older :)
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful weekend Katherine
Oh I know! Books do have a way of stacking up and I collect a few things as well...
DeleteHi Katherine,
ReplyDeleteI am quite new to the world of the short story collection, however I have so far been pleasantly surprised by the quality of some of the writing and 'Even In Death' certainly has an intriguing premise.
I am wondering why two people are going to need all those khakis and sweaters, unless they are planning a long journey to a cool climate.
Your lines from 'The Collector' were just a little too close to home for comfort! We used to have quite a minimalist home, but over the past few years I seem to have becom something of a hoarder, especially where books, knitting yarns and jigsaw puzzles are concerned. I am perpetually on the verge oh having a total blitz, but then just can't bear to part with any of it, at the last minute!
Thanks for the interesting post and feature, I love the book's cover art by the way!
Yvonne.
Oh I can understand that. I have so much stuff that I'm just about to use so I can't get rid of it!
DeleteHaha! Good pick! Any way to get more treats is a plus in my books.
ReplyDeleteHave fun trick or treating with your little Jango.
Happy reading!
Brittany @ This is the Story of My(Reading) Life
Thanks! He had such a great time. I'm definitely pro treat!
DeleteLove the snippet on clutter control and the sepia-look cover art. Have fun tonight!
ReplyDeleteThanks! We had a lot of fun. I love the cover art on this one as well!
DeleteThat's an interesting book beginning; I'm trying to imagine the necessity for all those khaki pants and sweaters.
ReplyDeleteI can relate to the landfill quote. I am collector and a hoarder so that description fits me pretty well. :D
It's definitely intriguing! I'm not a hoarder but that's more my husband doing than mine.
DeleteWhat's with all the sweaters, I wonder??
ReplyDeleteHappy Halloween and happy weekend!
Definitely intriguing!
DeleteInteresting beginning. The cover is quite different.
ReplyDeleteENJOY!!
I would go Halloweening with a few of my favorite characters that aren't scary.
Stop by for my full answer if you like, and Happy Halloween.
I do love cover on this one! I'd definitely prefer a no scary character!
DeleteOh that would be fun heading out with a character from a book.
ReplyDeleteWouldn't it! There's so many I'd like to meet!
DeleteBeautiful cover! Interesting opening. Thanks for sharing! :)
ReplyDeleteHere's mine:
NYZE@everythingnyze
Thanks! I do love the cover!
DeleteThat would be fun to go out with a character from a book. That sounds like an interesting read.
ReplyDeleteSo far I'm enjoying this one!
DeleteI'd choose Jack Torrance from "The Shining" just to mix it up!
ReplyDeleteKatherine, thanks so much for the shout out!!
If any of you would like to review Even In Death, I'll send you a copy- just send me an email at Feltenk@hotmail.com ;)
Jack Torrance is definitely mixing it up! It'd be interesting to see what happens! I'm enjoying this one!
DeleteIt would be awesome to have a best friend that owned a vintage clothing store! Great pick and I'm adding the book to my wish list, it definitely sounds like something I would enjoy. Thanks for sharing and I hope you and Jango Fet had a great night trick-or-treating. :)
ReplyDeleteThe books make my mouth water with all the clothes talk!
DeleteI'm always terrible at answering questions involving which character I would want to do something with. I don't know why. I like your answer though, even though I have never read the book you mention. :-)
ReplyDeleteThanks! I'm not great at it either. These books are fun though they took me awhile to get used to it.
