Friday Linkups: The Wife, The Maid and the Mistress

It's Friday so I'm linking up with Coffee Addicted Writer for Book Blogger Hop, Rose City Reader for Book Beginnings on Fridays, and Freda's Voice for the Friday 56

Book Blogger Question:
How many bookshelves do you have?  How do you organize them?

My Answer:
I'm actually not a huge book collector.  I read a lot of paperbacks and those either end up being swapped through paperbackswap.com or getting sent to a used bookstore.  For the rest I have 3 full length bookcases for non-fiction that I share 1 of with my husband.  The underside of the island in the kitchen and the back wall of the pantry have shelves that hold cookbooks.  I also have a half size bookcase that I use as a night stand next to my bed.  This one has all of my TBR books.  I have mysteries and fiction on the top shelf - 2 rows and stacked on top.  On the bottom shelf is romance, the books that are deemed keepers and my Agatha collection.

I have a few bins under the bed that have a few more of my collections.  It's a good thing I'm not a big collector right!

Today's Book Beginnings and 56 come from Ariel Lawhon's The Wife, The Maid, and the Mistress.  I have been wanting to get my hands on this book for months so I was thrilled when I found it at my library.  This is a historical fiction surrounding the very true disappearance of New York Judge Joseph Crater.

The Beginning:

"We begin in a bar.  We will end here as well, but that is more than you need to know at the moment.  For now, a woman sits in a corner booth waiting to give her confession."

From page 56 of my library edition:

"Stella's eyes filled with the canoe.  Long after the sound of Irv's delivery truck was replaced by the hush of afternoon, she hung by the water's edge, wondering exactly what had happened to Joe."

So would you keep reading?  I can't wait to really get into this one!

  4. A also say I'm not a big book collector. I also tell myself that I will only buy ebooks from now on in order to save space. We are good at kidding ourselves over our book addiction are we not!

  6. Very interesting beginning. It doesn't tell her mood. Is she sad to be there? Ashamed? Relieved? I like the beginning.

    1. I like the beginning as well. It's hard to gauge her mood at the beginning of the book. It's almost triumphant with a touch of resigned.

  7. Should I feel guilty about the 18 or so bookcases we have in our house? ;-) We're definitely collectors, my daughter and I! Though I am starting to go through and prune. I took a box and a half of nonfiction to the library for their booksale a week or two ago, and about 4 boxes several months ago (mostly stuff we collected while homeschooling, and no longer needed.) And I'm sure I'll be taking a lot more over the next few months.

Your current read sounds interesting! Looking forward to the review.

    1. Don't feel guilty! I have a husband who is a complete minimalist so this is the compromise between basically building the house with books and owning nothing. I already have plans to turn one of the kid's rooms into a reading room and then the book collecting is on!

  8. Nice collection of books! I've mostly stopped buying hardbacks, which was really hard to do, and utilize my library as much as possible :)
The Wife, The Maid and The Mistress sounds quite mysterious. Another book to add to the list :)

    1. I have to fight the urge to not buy and keep every book but I know if I did we'd be drowning in books! I'm really looking forward to this one! I've heard great things about it!

  9. Huh, these little snippets leaves me confused. I think that's the allure of the book though, right?

    1. I think it's a very complex book and there's a lot going on with 3 different story lines. I'm really excited about reading this one.

  10. Three bookshelves of non-fiction!! I have one single shelf on a full-size bookshelf devoted to non-fiction. Eeep. Sounds like despite not being a collector you still have books all over the house. Love it!

    1. I think I keep more non-fiction than fiction so it tends to stack up more. I thought I didn't really have many books but when I was listing them out the list kept getting longer and longer. Whoops!

  11. I am a book collector, although I'm trying to learn to give some away and make more room..for more books.
I have around 1,000 books on my Kindle.
I enjoy reading. But, I'll never read them all.
However, I like that they are organized in categories on my Kindle and by author otherwise.
I'm visiting from book blogger hop.
    Nice to meet you.

    1. I refuse to believe I'll never read all the books I have. It's probably impossible but I refuse to believe it! I love that you have even your Kindle organized. Impressive!

  14. You organize the way I do. Not by author but by genre.

Ohhhh....I loved THE WIFE, THE MAID, AND THE MISTRESS. Sounds as if you are enjoying it too.

That book is one of my favorites from last year. Can't wait to hear your thoughts.

    Happy Hopping!!

    1. With mysteries I kind of organize by author as I'll try to keep a series together but that's it. I'm definitely mostly genre.

I'm so excited about this one. I hope to have the review up next Thursday.

  15. I am not that much of a book collector either. I am more of a library reader, but I still have my own copies of my favorites.
I love your excerpt too. Whatever happens next will certainly be interesting.

    1. I'm really looking forward to this one. I've definitely been loving the library in the last year or so. Cuts down on the books I have and if I want to reread it I can always just go check it out again!

  16. Oh, both of those snippets are intriguing. I'd keep reading.

I am definitely a book collector. I have 10 bookcases for print books and 5 pages of folders on my Kindle. :D

    1. Definitely sounds like you're a collector! I'd probably be more of one but my husband is a serious minimalist and this is our compromise!

I'm really looking forward to this book. Hope it's as good as I expect it to be.

    1. The bookcases doesn't surprise me at all Kimba! What we have is a compromise. If it was up to my husband we'd own nothing. If it was up to me we'd own enough books to actually build the house out of.
Looking forward to this book! It sounds really interesting.

  19. I'm really excited about this one. I know a little about the actual case so I'm excited to see it in fictionalized form!

  20. I wish I wasn't a book collector. So many books! Let me see . . . .Six big bookcases in the library, two half bookcases. One bookcase in the living room and a small shelf in the dining area (for cookbooks). Upstairs: two bookcases in the guest bedroom and six in the loft area (four of which are smallish)--not including the books on my desk, which is covered with them. Oh, and one bookcase in my daughter's room.

Lawhon's book sounds like it will be very good. I hope you are enjoying it!

    1. Wow! That's impressive! When we have more people living here I'm sure I'll have more books as I do love them..I think what helps me the most is that I don't keep most of what I read. Otherwise I'd be drowning in them!

I'm really excited about Lawhon's book!
