Everyone raved about it so I finally picked it up. And felt much the same way that you did. Maybe if I'd read the book as a younger person, some of the romanticism of it would have captured my attention more? I suspect the things you mentioned would be partially due to the time period in which this was written. I also suspect that 'The Hundred and One' probably is a little different than the Disney version. I don't know that for a fact though. I do understand that there is a movie of this book.
